Farm animals

As Mainsgill is still a working Farm we have the traditional farm animals which you can also see. (Please note these may differ during different times of year.)

This includes Sheep, Cows and Goats.

To keep up with the farm animals and what is happening of the farm don't forget to subscribe to Jack at Mainsgill who is sure to keep you posted.

Sheep

We lamb over 400 ewes each year in Feburuary & March. Where you can come down to the lambing shed and see what's going on live.

We primarily have Texel cross ewes however have a small flock of pedigree Dutch spotted sheep, that can usually be seen at Mainsgill (as seen in the picture to your left).

Cows

At Mainsgill we have our own suckler herd calving over 120 cows a year. We rear the calves and use the heifers to breed off for the future or sell these through the farmshop. All the steers are sold through the local cattle market as we only use heifer meat through the shop.

We also buy in heifers from a local farmer up the road and rear these to sell through the shop.

Goats

We have Goats on site as expected usually causing mayhem. They like to try and escape anyway possible.

Pigs

We have around 150 pigs at one time which we buy in as weaners. We fatten these pigs to sell through the farmshop.

We sometimes have a pig with pigglets available to see.
